Hotel Atlantis has an impressive history. It was built in the 1960s as a new hotel with a modern building concept and is situated in the unusual location at the foot of the Uetliberg mountain. The hotel became famous as the “place to be” in Zurich in the 1970s. It changed ownership several times, and was used for various different purposes. However, in recent decades, the Atlantis was beginning to look sad and dated. In 2012, Monoplan was tasked with the general planning contract for the conversion of the hotel. The aim was to revive the new Hotel Atlantis as a 5-star hotel within the premium segment.
To achieve this, all of the rooms, all of the HVAC systems and the façade were renewed. One of the highlights is the new façade. Its embossed pattern harks back to the old façade, which was made from exposed aggregate concrete. All of the measures were coordinated with the historic monuments protection authority of Zurich, to account for the tradition-rich history of the building in a responsible manner.
